The three kingdoms of nature were originally seen as a threefold expression of one living entity. And from this threefold kingdom, the human trinity of body, soul, and spirit emerges as a microcosm of the natural cosmos. Thus we preserve these origins in our bodies and beings: in the mineral nature of our bones; in the plant-like power to assimilate and grow; and in the vital freedom of the red-blooded animal: the power to roam.

For the ancient alchemists, these three kingdoms equated to the Hermetic trinity of Sulphur, Mercury, and Salt—the animating power, the power of sentience, and the power to physically endure. An obscure, seventeenth century Hermetic text describes this dynamic as the “triple subsistence in one created essence” in which “all the virtues of the vegetable, animal, and mineral Nature are able to be investigated”. For there is a “vegetating force in the nature of the volatile Mercury”, an “animating force between spirit and body in the Sulphur”, and finally, a “minerality that obtains a body in the guise of a Salt“ (The Basilian Aphorisms, Auckland: Rubedo Press, 2018).

Similarly, this collection of talismans expresses the synergy of the three kingdoms. This is explicit in its raw materials: mineral (chalcedony), vegetable (harakeke), and animal (bone). But more than this, a talisman is always an ensouled object: a natural material that becomes the living body for a soul imbued with intention. A talisman is a triple kingdom in and of itself, a complete being, reflecting and embellishing the human need for wholeness among the natural, imaginal, and spiritual worlds.
